History of Hollywood, FL
Joseph Young was the mastermind behind Hollywood, Florida. He bought the land and began creating plans for the city in 1920. In 1925, Young was elected the first mayor of the city, which features beautiful man-made lakes along roads and carefully planned districts to separate neighborhoods, plus businesses, churches, parks, and a golf course. Three circles were created as distinctive features of the streetscape, and an intercoastal waterway was also constructed. In 1926, a devastating hurricane caused extensive damage to Hollywood, destroying buildings and killing 37 people. Joseph Young rebuilt his beloved city, although he met with many financial challenges during the process. His solution was to create a port to attract cruise ships from around the world. Thus, Port Everglades was born, and it’s become one of the busiest seaports in the state. Although Young died unexpectedly in 1934, Hollywood continued to grow and expand under new leadership.
Hollywood is the 12th largest city in the state of Florida, and it’s just more than 30 square miles in size. Situated on the Atlantic shore of Florida, Hollywood has nearly six miles of beachfront for residents and tourists to enjoy. Hollywood is full of parks and golf courses, and it has a bustling shopping district. The city also has a number of historic structures, including the home that Joseph Young built in 1925.
Summers in Hollywood are oppressively hot and humid, but winters tend to be mild and clear. The low temperature rarely dips below 48 degrees Fahrenheit, and it’s also rare for it to be hotter than about 92 degrees in the summer. Between the months of November and April, Hollywood’s weather is pleasant and comfortable. The rainy season lasts between the end of May and mid-October.
