We are open - safety is our top priority!
If discoloration, a chipped or misaligned tooth, or even small gaps between your teeth have taken the joy out of your smile, porcelain veneers might be the way to restore your confidence. This fairly simple cosmetic treatment improves the outer beauty of otherwise healthy teeth that need just a little boost in color, shape, size, or positioning. Call our experienced dentist in Aventura at (305) 921-0539 to schedule a consultation to see if veneers are the right dental solution for you.
What is a Porcelain Veneer?
Porcelain veneers essentially cover the front of a tooth or teeth with thin ceramic layers that mimic natural tooth enamel. They stay firmly in place, so no one but you and your dentist knows they’re there. They’re a versatile way to help improve aesthetic concerns such as:
- Color: Smoking, certain medications, food and drink, and even aging all affect our teeth over the years, turning them dingy or discolored. Veneers can make your teeth look bright and white again, taking years off your appearance. A single veneer also can target a discolored tooth that might have been particularly resistant to other whitening treatments.
- Size and shape: Have a tooth that’s chipped, or teeth that are shorter than their neighbors because of tooth grinding, also called bruxism? Veneers can smooth away those flaws. Veneers also can adjust the shape of your teeth to best complement your features if you’ve always felt like your teeth looked like the wrong shape or size for your face.
- Alignment and spacing: Porcelain veneers can make minor adjustments in alignment and spacing such as closing small gaps between teeth, so you don’t have to bother with braces if you don’t otherwise need them.
To apply one or more veneers, our dentist first will take a mold of your teeth so the veneer has a custom fit that looks natural and feels comfortable in your mouth. Depending on the brand and type of veneers used, our dentist in Aventura might have to reduce a small amount of your natural tooth’s enamel (less than 1 mm of the surface) so the veneer adheres snugly against your tooth. But once attached, your porcelain veneer will be as permanent as a filling or a crown. You won’t have to worry about it becoming stained or shifting around as you eat or speak. Just enjoy the smile you’ve always imagined.
How Is a Veneer Different from a Crown?
Both veneers and crowns dramatically can improve the appearance of one or more teeth by changing the color, shape, or size. But they’re used for different purposes. A veneer is designed for healthy teeth that have minor imperfections and covers only the front side of the tooth. A crown (sometimes called a cap) covers the entire tooth down to the gums and is the better option when a tooth has lost a lot of its structure because of decay, trauma, clenching, grinding, or age. If your problem tooth is among the teeth in the back of your mouth, a crown also might be the better choice because of the stronger biting force that your molars use.
Just like veneers, crowns are custom-made from the same material and molded to fit your teeth. In order to place a crown, more of the natural exterior enamel – at least 2 mm – must be removed. But once adhered in place, a crown has the same permanence and durability as a veneer.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Veneers are a permanent option for improving the appearance of your teeth. As such, they could last several decades, depending on your lifestyle, proper care, and the brand of veneers used. Treat them as well as you would your natural teeth, and they’ll keep your smile just the way you like it for years to come.
What Are Lumineers®?
Lumineers® are a specific brand of veneers. They’re ultra-thin, highly translucent, and yet highly durable – they can last more than 20 years! Because of their thinness, Lumineers® need little to no reduction in the surface enamel of your natural tooth to be applied. They not only look natural but feel comfortable and also resist staining.
How Do I Care For Veneers?
If your veneers cover teeth worn from a habit such as clenching or grinding, you’ll likely need a custom-made night guard to protect them. But for the most part, you care for veneers as you would your natural teeth, brushing and flossing them each day. That said, veneers do like a gentle touch. While you don’t need to baby them, we wouldn’t advise biting into very hard foods, such as candy apples, or using your teeth to open packages or rip off price tags. Our experienced dentist in Aventura will gladly review any specifics with you about your dental care once your veneers are in place.
