Want to say goodbye to dingy, yellow teeth in less than an hour? Teeth whitening—one of the fastest and most affordable methods of cosmetic dentistry—helps remove years of stains and discoloration from your teeth essentially in minutes.
Our office in Homestead has two ways to help you achieve the radiant smile you want within your budget and your lifestyle. You can relax in our office while you whiten your teeth, or if you prefer more privacy, take home an easy-to-use kit that will whiten your teeth more gradually.
Whichever method you choose provides noticeable results, especially when applied after a teeth cleaning. A professional cleaning removes any food particles and bacteria that can interfere with the whitening treatment or contribute to tooth stains. Our office in Homestead is proud to offer Zoom® Ultimate Protocol to effectively treat deep discoloration or tooth stains. This two-pronged strategy uses Zoom WhiteSpeed in our office with Zoom NiteWhite take-home treatment. Patients in a case study saw their teeth become an average of eleven shades whiter.
After an initial consultation to confirm that you don’t have any gum disease or cavities, our hygienist or our dentist will assess your current tooth color and take impressions for custom-made trays to hold Zoom’s high-concentration whitening gel. While you’re in our office, our dental professional will apply the gel to the trays and turn on a special chairside light to accelerate the whitening process. We can whiten your teeth comfortably in up to four 15-minute increments, depending on your needs.
To complement the in-office treatment, you’ll also use two to four take-home treatments of Zoom NiteWhite. Each kit includes lightweight, comfortable trays that fit the shape and size of your mouth. Simply fill them with whitening gel, bite gently, and wear them for up to four hours daily or overnight for roughly two weeks.
If you don’t need the intensity of Zoom Ultimate Protocol, or if you prefer to whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home, our office in Homestead also provides Opalescence Go. This professional-strength product is available only from dentists but safely and effectively enables you to whiten your teeth on your own schedule. Treatment lasts five to ten days, but many people see their teeth lighten several shades after the first few uses.
Each take-home kit features innovative trays prefilled with a whitening gel that includes potassium nitrate and fluoride. Findings have shown that these ingredients improve your teeth’s overall health by minimizing tooth sensitivity, helping to reduce cavities, and increasing the hardness of tooth enamel.
To use, simply center one of the disposable trays over your upper or lower teeth. Bite gently and suck down or swallow to secure the gel. Then remove the colored outer tray to reveal the clear and comfortable inner tray you’ll wear during treatment.
Choose a 15% concentration of whitening ingredients to wear for 15 to 20 minutes a day over five to ten days, or a 10% concentration worn for about 30 to 60 minutes over the same length of time. Once your daily treatment is done, just remove and discard the tray and brush your teeth as you do normally.
Our tooth color comes from a combination of the light reflected off the enamel (the hard outer layer of our teeth) and the color of the dentin (the middle layer) underneath. We all notice that our teeth become less white or even yellow as we age because the enamel thins and the dentin darkens.
Genetic makeup also determines the thickness and smoothness of our tooth enamel. Some of us might have thinner enamel—and more visible dentin—than others. Enamel is porous, so some foods and beverages also can affect our tooth color.
But that morning cup of coffee isn’t solely to blame for dull, dingy, or discolored teeth. The most common causes of tooth discoloration include:
In addition to removing stains or discoloration, tooth whitening can also help prepare your teeth for dental work such as a crown, a bridge, a veneer or dentures. The dental porcelain used in such treatments is color-matched to your natural teeth to blend in seamlessly. These cosmetic and restorative dental fixtures are designed to be stain resistant, so they don’t respond to whitening treatments. So if you whiten dull or dingy teeth afterward, your dental work will stand out.
