What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?

An oral surgeon is an experienced dentist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and defects that involve the teeth, jaws, or face. An oral surgeon completes dental school, then continues in a four-year hospital-based residency program, training alongside medical residents in general surgery techniques, internal medicine, plastic surgery, emergency medical care, anesthesiology, and otolaryngology services (ear, nose, and throat).

Many dentists in Hialeah refer their patients to our oral surgeon for complicated procedures and treatment. Call us today at (305) 921-0481 to see how we can help you.

What are Common Types of Oral Surgery Services?

Your dentist may recommend you visit our oral surgeon at Palm Dental Center for a variety of reasons. Oral surgeons can correct problems with the jaw, facial bone, and soft tissues. Here is a look at some of the common types of oral surgery services in Hialeah:

Wisdom teeth removal

One of the most common types of oral surgery is wisdom teeth extractions. Wisdom teeth, which are the third set of molars that typically emerge in the late teen years, are often impacted, meaning they’re trapped under the gum line. Impacted teeth can cause swelling, pain, and gum infection. They can also press against nearby teeth, shifting those out of position. Our oral surgeon can remove these problem teeth in the comfort of our own office. READ MORE

Difficult tooth extractions

Sometimes teeth need to be removed because of decay, infection, gum disease, crowding, or trauma. When the tooth is visible above the gum line, a general dentist can usually remove it. But if it needs to have gum tissue or bone removed in order to take the tooth out, then your dentist may refer you to our oral surgeon. Surgical tooth extractions often require stitches to close the site so it can heal properly.

Dental implant placement

Dental implants are a popular solution for people who are missing one or more teeth. The implants act like tooth roots. Our oral surgeon places the small implant into the jaw bone, where it fuses to the bone and provides a stable support for a crown, bridge, or denture. READ MORE

All-on-4® treatment concept

Are you tired of having a removable denture? Our oral surgeon uses the All-on-4 treatment concept to permanently secure the denture in place. It attaches the denture to four dental implants which prevents the denture from sliding, eliminates the need for denture paste, and helps keep the jaw bone from shrinking. That in turn helps prevent premature wrinkling around the mouth. READ MORE

Pre-prosthetic surgery (before dentures)

Your regular dentist may refer you to our oral surgeon at Palm Dental Center before you get a denture. Oral surgeons can extract any natural teeth before the denture is placed. The oral surgeon can also remove the small, bony bumps in the mouth called tori that can interfere with the denture’s ability to sit on your gums comfortably.

Bone grafting

Gum disease and tooth loss can reduce the amount of bone in your jaw. If you have suffered bone loss, then our oral surgeon can build up the bone again through a procedure called bone grafting. Some people may need bone grafting to ensure there is enough bone to hold a dental implant in place.

Sinus lift

A sinus lift is when the bone graft needs to happen in the upper jaw either because there is not enough bone to support a dental implant, or because the sinuses are too close to the implant site. The bone is added between the top jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of the nose.

Oral cancer diagnosis / Lesion biopsy and removal

Oral cancer is on the rise. Our oral surgeon in Hialeah can take samples of suspicious-looking tissues or growths and send them to a laboratory for testing. In many cases, our oral surgeon can remove pre-cancerous or cancerous legions or will work in tandem with another specialist to address your specific needs. There are many surgical procedures available to remove a tumor and restore the appearance and function of tissue that has been impacted by cancer.

Our oral surgeon at Palm Dental Center has been trained in orthognathic surgery as well, which is corrective jaw surgery that addresses problems with a protruding jaw, receding chin, jaw joint pain, and lip position.

Oral Surgery with Sedation in Hialeah

We understand that many people nervous about going to the dentist – and that can be heightened at the idea of having oral surgery. Our oral surgeon is highly-skilled in multiple types of sedation to ensure our patients comfort. We offer IV sedation, which is also referred to as twilight sedation. The sedative is delivered safely through an IV and people often feel so comfortable and relaxed, they fall asleep and wake up with no memory of the procedure. Of course, we also have laughing gas, and topical anesthetics like novacaine.

During your first visit with the oral surgeon, we’ll discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and determine the best type of sedation for your specific needs. You’ll leave your appointment understanding your treatment options, the timeline, and the costs. We’ll be happy to work with your insurance company to maximize your benefits. Our goal is to make your visit go as smoothly as possible. Call us today at (305) 921-0481. Our team looks forward to seeing how we can help you.
