What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
While both general dentists and oral surgeons go to dental school, an oral surgeon continues to train for an additional four years, typically in a hospital-based residency program. Oral surgeons train alongside medical residents in general surgery techniques, emergency medical care, anesthesiology, internal medicine, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat).
Oral surgery is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). These dentists have the skills, training, and experience needed to diagnose and treat complex problems with teeth, jaws, and other parts of the facial structure.
We are proud to be the preferred partner for oral surgery services for many dentists in Florida and the surrounding communities.
What are Common Types of Oral Surgery Services?
Your regular dentist may recommend you visit one of our oral surgeons at Towncare Dental for a variety of reasons. Oral surgeons can correct problems with the jaw, facial bone, and soft tissues. Here is a look at some of the common types of oral surgery services offered at Towncare Dental:
Difficult tooth extractions
While most dentists perform simple tooth extractions, our oral surgeons can remove teeth that are impacted (trapped) beneath the bone or causing other problems. READ MORE
Wisdom teeth removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop, and the jawbone is often not large enough to accommodate them. Sometimes the wisdom teeth become partially trapped under the gums or start to crowd the surrounding teeth, moving them out of proper alignment. Other teeth can also be impacted, meaning they’re trapped between the jaw bone and the gum tissue. Impacted teeth can cause swelling, pain, and gum infection. Our oral surgeon can remove these problem teeth in the comfort of our own office. READ MORE
Dental implant placement
Dental implants are a popular solution for people who are missing one or more teeth. The implants are posts that act like tooth roots. Our oral surgeon can embed the small implant into the jaw bone, where it fuses to the bone and provides a stable support system for a crown, bridge, or denture. READ MORE
If you have suffered bone loss, then our oral surgeon can build up the bone again through a procedure called bone grafting. Some people may need bone grafting to ensure there is enough bone to hold a dental implant in place.
Denture-related oral surgery procedures
There are many reasons why your dentist may refer you to one of our oral surgeons at Towncare Dental before you get a denture. The oral surgery specialist can pull any teeth that need to be removed before the denture can be placed, for example. Also, some people have small, bony mouth bumps called tori that can interfere with the denture’s ability to fit comfortably. The oral surgeon can remove the tori, smoothing out the bone protrusions on the roof or the bottom of the mouth so the denture will fit better. READ MORE
Temporamandibular joint treatment (TMJ / TMD)
If you suffer from headaches, earaches, or jaw pain, there may be a problem with the small joint in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. Ask our oral surgeon whether surgery is needed to correct this condition or if it can be addressed through a mouth guard or another non-surgical option.
Oral cancer diagnosis / Lesion biopsy and removal
Our oral surgeon in West Kendall can take samples of abnormal tissues or growths and send them to a laboratory for testing. In many cases, our oral surgeon can remove suspicious or cancerous legions or will work in tandem with another specialist to address your specific needs. Early detection saves lives.
A sinus lift, which is also called sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. The bone is built up between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of the nose. It may be needed before a dental implant can be placed in the upper jaw.
Our oral surgeons at Towncare Dental have received extensive training in other specialty services as well, such as cleft lip and cleft palate repair; facial injury repair; sleep apnea treatment that involves removing the soft tissue of the oropharynx in the back of the mouth; and orthognathic surgery, which is corrective jaw surgery that addresses problems with a protruding jaw, receding chin, jaw joint pain, and lip position. The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our oral surgeons.
