Protect Vulnerable Molars with Dental Sealants

For children and adults prone to tooth decay in their molars and premolars, dental sealants may be the perfect solution. The chewing surfaces of back teeth are rough and uneven; they contain many tiny fissures and grooves where food and plaque accumulate. Because toothbrushes can’t effectively reach into all the small pits and depressions, plaque remains in contact with tooth enamel and eventually causes decay. Teeth sealants are thin layers of plastic resin material that form barriers against food and plaque, so they never reach the enamel of vulnerable teeth. Dentist seal teeth to ensure that they are essentially protected from cavities.

Placement of Dental Sealants
The first dental sealant is usually placed on the first permanent molar to erupt beyond the gum. Sealants are commonly applied to molars and premolars with fissures and grooves, but other permanent teeth that have grooves or pits may also benefit. In some cases, vulnerable primary teeth are sealed to prevent early loss. Adults without fillings in their molars are also candidates.

Appearance of Teeth Sealants
Depending on the product used, a dental sealant can be transparent, white, or tinted.

The Process of Applying Teeth Sealants
Before placing the sealant, each tooth to be sealed is cleaned, dried and prepared with an acid solution to make the targeted surface rougher; this helps the sealant bond with the enamel. A liquid sealant is then applied and hardened, sometimes with the use of a special light. The process will effectively seal teeth and eliminate cavity progression.

Duration of Treatment
Sealants can seal teeth for up to ten years with care and maintenance. If a sealant becomes chipped or otherwise damaged, it can easily be replaced.
