A tooth removal or tooth extraction is usually simple procedure that can be performed in the dentist’s chair. That’s because the teeth are not rigidly fixed to the jaw bone. They’re attached to the bone by fibers called periodontal ligaments. The ligaments can be separated from the jaw bone and the tooth extracted by a process of expertly manipulating the tooth.

Why a Tooth May Need to be Removed

Many people call us seeking a dental appointment because they are experiencing several tooth pain. In some cases, we can relieve the pain and restore your tooth back to health. In other instances, the dentist may recommend that the tooth be extracted. Common reasons for tooth extractions include:

• Severely cracked or broken tooth
  Your teeth aren’t indestructible. Even a simple act like biting down on a popcorn kernel too hard can break or crack a tooth. If the damage is minor, the tooth can be topped with a crown. When the damage has reached the middle of the tooth containing the tissues and cells known as the pulp, you may need a root canal before the tooth is crowned. In the most severe case, the tooth may be too damaged or rotted to save and the dentist will recommend an extraction.
• Severe decay (cavity)
  Every time you eat or drink, plaque is left behind on your teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria that can erode the tooth enamel and create a hole in the tooth, known as a cavity. If the cavity is small, it can be filled. Larger cavities can be fixed with a crown. But if the tooth is severely infected and the patient is in pain, the dentist may recommend a root canal or an extraction.
• Baby tooth won’t come out
  For generations, boys and girls have eagerly awaited those moments when a baby tooth falls out and they can place it beneath their pillow for the tooth fairy. Sometimes, however, a baby tooth fails to fall out naturally and blocks the emergence of the permanent tooth. When this occurs, the dentist will extract the baby tooth so the permanent tooth can grow in.
• Teeth too crowded
  Along with acne and rejection by the opposite sex, braces are a rite of passage for many adolescents. Braces or other orthodontic treatments are often recommended when the jaw is too small to accommodate all of the permanent teeth. This can cause the teeth to grow in out of alignment and overlap. Before pursuing braces or other orthodontic remedies to straighten the teeth, you dentist may extract one or more teeth to make room for the others.
• Advanced stage gum disease
  The bacteria in plaque aren’t just a danger to the enamel of your teeth. It can also attack your gum tissue, causing periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. As the infection progresses, the gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth and the ligaments that fasten the teeth to the jaw bone become compromised. When this occurs, the tooth may loosen and fall out on its own or require pulling by the dentist.
• Impacted wisdom teeth
  They’re called wisdom teeth because they begin to emerge at the age of maturity, from 17 to 25 years old. But, in many cases, there isn’t enough room in the jaw to accommodate this third set of molars. If the wisdom tooth remains partially or completely under the gum line and is impacting the tooth next to it, it’s called an impacted wisdom tooth. Our dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon to remove the impacted tooth.

If our dentist refers to the type of extraction you need as a “simple tooth extraction,” it means the dentist has determined that the shape and condition of the tooth roots will allow the tooth to be easily removed. This is also referred to as an uncomplicated extraction.

For the most part, a tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure that can be performed by a general dentist right in the comfort of our Jupiter Dental Group office. In other cases, however, our dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon to perform the tooth extraction.

Wisdom Tooth Removal in Jupiter

Nature provides us with a third set of molars known as wisdom teeth that begin emerging in your late teens or early adult years. But, many times, there isn’t enough room in the jaw for these new molars to grow in. This can result in several oral health problems that can be determined through x-rays. They include:

• A jaw that is too small for the wisdom teeth to properly come through the gum line
• Wisdom teeth that are only partially coming through the gums
• Wisdom teeth that are coming in at an angle
• Wisdom teeth that are damaging the adjacent teeth
• Wisdom teeth that are damaging the jaw bone
• Wisdom teeth that are leading to gum infection

If you are experiencing any of these concerns, our dentist may recommend you have the wisdom teeth removed to eliminate existing problems or to prevent future ones. It’s easiest to have the wisdom teeth extracted before the age of 25 because the wisdom tooth roots are not fully developed and the jaw bone is not as dense as it will when you are older.
