History of Jupiter, FL

Jupiter, FL was first home to members of the Jobe tribe who resided near the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. The tribe's name was misunderstood by a Spanish mapmaker at the time, who recorded it as "Jove." When English settlers encountered the name, later on, they took it to be in reference to the god Jove, who was also known by the name Jupiter. The name of the area stuck, and it has been known as Jupiter ever since.

Like many other communities in the region, Jupiter was used as the site of a military fort during the Seminole Wars. The fort was initially erected in 1838 following a battle with the Seminole Native Americans, but it didn't begin to significantly expand until 1855. It was at this time that the Jupiter Military Reservation was established around the fort. The reservation was over 9,000 acres in size and also included the site of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. This lighthouse, which has become one of Jupiter's most famous landmarks, was constructed in 1860 and is commonly used as a symbol for the town. It stands 105 feet tall on top of an already 46-foot-high hill.

The success of the fledgling community in those early years can largely be attributed to the Jupiter Inlet. The access it provided to the Atlantic Ocean allowed for several industries to flourish in the region. Residents of the area took up pineapple, citrus, and flower farming as well as fishing and cypress logging. Using the inlet, the citizens of Jupiter were then able to easily ship their goods all around the country.

Jupiter continued to grow over the next few decades until it was officially incorporated on Feb. 9, 1925.
