In most cases, tooth extractions are a routine procedure that can be done in the dentist’s chair. Teeth are attached to the jaw bone with fibers called periodontal ligaments. By expertly manipulating a tooth, the dentist can detach these ligaments and remove the tooth.

Why a Tooth May Need to be Removed

Most people call Palm Dental Center to find out if they need to have a tooth removed when they’re experiencing a toothache. In many cases, the tooth can be saved. However, common reasons for tooth extractions include:

• Severely cracked or broken tooth
  Wear and tear, grinding your teeth at night, dental decay and an accident or injury can cause a tooth to crack or break. Often the crack or break can be capped with a crown. If the crack or break has penetrated to the connective tissues and cells in the center of the tooth, called the pulp, you may need a root canal before a crown is placed on the tooth. In other cases, the tooth is too damaged or rotten to save and the dentist may recommend it be extracted.
• Severe cavity (dental decay)
  Dental decay is an infection that erodes the tooth enamel causing a cavity (hole) in the tooth. If the cavity is small, it can be fixed with a filling. Larger cavities can be covered with a crown. However, if the tooth is severely infected and causing a great deal of pain, the dentist may either recommend a root canal or tooth extraction.
• Baby tooth retained
  What child hasn’t eagerly awaited the loss of a baby tooth to be placed beneath the pillow in anticipation of a visit from the tooth fairy? But there are times when a primary tooth fails to fall out on its own, preventing the permanent tooth from growing in. When this occurs, the dentist will pull the baby tooth so the new tooth can emerge.
• Tooth removal before orthodontic treatment
  A person’s permanent teeth begin to emerge during adolescence. But sometimes the jaw is too small to accommodate all of the teeth that are emerging. As a result, the teeth crowd one another and begin to overlap. When this occurs, the dentist may need to pull one or more teeth the make room for the remaining teeth. The extraction is often followed by orthodontic treatments including braces in order to properly align the remaining teeth.
• Advanced gum disease
  Just as bacteria can attack the enamel of the teeth, causing cavities, bacteria also can cause an infection of the gums known as periodontal disease. This infection can result in the gum tissue pulled away from the teeth. It can also compromise the ligaments that hold the teeth to the jaw bone. The tooth may loosen and fall out on its own or the dentist may need to pull the tooth.
• Wisdom tooth or teeth are causing pain
  Wisdom teeth are so named because they emerge in the back of the jaw between the ages of 17 and 25. In many cases, however, there is not enough room in the jaw for these third molars to grow in. If a wisdom tooth remains partially or fully beneath the gum line and impacts the tooth above it, it’s called an impacted wisdom tooth. The dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon to remove the impacted tooth.

Wisdom Tooth Removal in Hialeah

Most people have a third set of molars emerge through the gum line during the later teen and early adult years. They are commonly called wisdom teeth. Often, though, there is not enough room in the jaw for the wisdom teeth to grow in. This can cause various oral health problems including:

• The wisdom teeth are only partially coming through the gums
• The wisdom teeth are coming in at an angle
• The wisdom teeth are damaging nearby teeth
• The wisdom teeth are damaging the jaw bone
• The wisdom teeth are causing a gum infection

Our team will take x-rays to determine what problems the wisdom teeth are causing. If our dentist cannot remove the wisdom tooth, we’ll refer you to an oral surgeon who will perform the procedure.

If the wisdom teeth are causing concern, it’s easiest to have them extracted before the age of 25. That’s because the wisdom tooth roots are not fully developed before age 25 and the jaw bone is not as solid as it will be later in life.
