What Are the Types of Gum Disease?

Gingivitis, the first stage in gum disease, is the only stage that can be reversed with professional dental treatment and good dental hygiene at home. If it goes untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis.

As the disease progresses, it can break down the tissue and bone that supports the teeth, causing the gums to separate from the teeth. This space between the enamel and gum is called “pockets.” More bacteria can gather in these pockets, leading to further destruction of the gum tissue and bone.
